| Trials and Portugal training camp, Feb 2009 |
|
It turns out the Alex Gregory and I can go pretty fast in the pair together. Trials was a few weeks ago now, but I have fond memories of that race and what we managed to achieve in a short time.
We beat the next pair by 17 seconds which is the sort of margin that I used to enjoy with Andy Hodge on our best rows at trials. Alex is a very strong and skilful athlete and I’m sure (at 24 yrs) he has a long way to go in the sport. It’ll be interesting to see what happens after a lot more practice.
After trials, and for the last two weeks, the heavyweight men have been training full force in Portugal. For us, the camp had no pressure and we were just rowing for the love of the sport, to get fit and to improve technique again. The centre, lake and staff were fantastic and even Jürgen couldn’t remember ever being in better surroundings for training. I made sure I took my camera and a few decent photos and looking back at them now, I’m sure we’ll be going back there soon - I hope you like the shots. For the next two weeks I will be training in a M8+ from Leander Club. We’ll be fitting in weights and a few rows in a pair but our main focus will be the Eights Head of the River Race on 21st March. |
