Thank you for the team awards, Dec 2008
Last Sunday (7th Dec) I was at the BBC West, Sports Personality of the Year awards reception. It is the first time I have been able to be there in person and it was fantastic to receive the award for ‘The Sporting Moment of the Year’ for the last 250m of our Olympic final.

With all the fantastic achievements and sporting moments from sports stars in my home region I was so surprised to hear ‘Pete Reed from the Coxless Four’ to come up and collect the award. I think the clincher must have been that it was Australia that we passed.

Between us, we’re doing quite well! I didn’t ever expect our rowing to kick up such a fuss, but Andy, Steve, Tom and Jürgen have all been kept very busy at similar awards ceremonies. Congratulations guys, I have very fond memories of the last stroke.

I want to say a huge thank you to the awards council for voting for us and to my crew who are the best in the world. Thanks also to Jürgen who never fails to impress everyone who hears anything about him – he is so understated and so good; to BBC Points West for supporting me for the last 4 years through thick and thin; and most importantly to the athletes of the British Rowing Team for being a good bunch of guys and girls making very tough training sessions never seem that bad.

I remember getting the BBC West, Newcomer of the Year award in 2005 after winning the World Championships. What a journey it has been since then.
