| Lord Snowdon Rowing Challenge |
|
Update: Photos of the event here. On Friday (5th March) I’m taking part in an indoor team sprint rowing race to celebrate the 80th birthday of veteran rower Lord Snowdon and raise money for The Snowdon Award Scheme. The Scheme provides grants to students with a physical or sensory disability to help them complete further or higher education or training. Hodgey and I are teaming up to row with 6 other guys from Oxford University, including the current OUBC President Sjoerd Hamburger who will be rowing in the Boat Race this year, against 8-man teams of alumni and current students from six other universities – Cambridge, Reading, London, Imperial and Oxford Brookes. We’ll be racing against the other guys we won with in Beijing - Steve Williams (Oxford Brookes) and Tom James (Cambridge) as well as others from last years coxless four Alex Partridge (Oxford Brookes) and Alex Gregory (Reading) and some of the top GB oarsmen from the last 20 years. It’s a unique opportunity and I imagine things are likely to get fairly competitive… It will be great to see our old Oxford coach Sean Bowden again too who’s our team manager for the day. The challenge is to see which team can row the furthest in 20 mins 15 seconds (the winning time of the Boat Race when Lord Snowdon took part 60 years ago), so we’re going to be putting down big power strokes and switching places with other team members to keep the rate high. The race will take place at London's Porchester Hall on Friday at 4pm and if you’d like to support The Snowden Award Scheme you can sponsor the teams here. |
