My body really was starting to feel strange over the trials weekend. I felt a bit flat from the start. Rather predictably, I got a proper cold the day after it finished – congestion, high heart rate, popping ears, sore throat – you know the drill.

I know my body well now after all these years – which makes judging illness a lot easier. I had a few comments on Twitter asking about how I deal with illness. Basically, you work closely with the team doctor and the coach and weigh up how you feel vs the nature of the training and act accordingly.

I can’t imagine I would have missed something as important as trials for a head cold – I’d just suffer after the event. For the Olympic Games, you’d try your very best to get through any ailment. For a light training day, there is little point in pushing through a high resting heart rate as it could turn nasty and put you back a long way.

If your symptoms are just above the neck and you’re in general training, you should be ok if you don’t push far too hard – just get loads of sleep, fluids and a healthy diet.

If your symptoms go below the neck then down tools until the heart rate has settled and then build up steadily to avoid a double-dip into the pain.

Best advice, don’t get ill! ‘Your health is your business’ as Jürgen always says. Stay warm, dry and well recovered and stay away from sick people. And wash your hands.
