Boston trials, Feb 2009
ImageAfter training tomorrow I’m driving up to Boston in Lincolnshire to the stretch of water where the third set of GB trials of the season take place.

The Olympians are exempt from the first set of GB trials that take place each year in October and the second set of trials were back in December in the single scull. I took a few months off after the Olympics to have a rest and catch up with my friends and family so didn’t go to either of those trials. I’ve now been back in full-time training for 6 weeks and so am looking forward to a bit of timed racing.

Over the last Olympiad I have always paired with Andy Hodge in GB trials. This time round he’s taking a bit of time to work on his sculling and I am pairing with Alex Gregory.

Alex has been in the GB squad for the last four years as a sculler, racing at the U23 World Championships in the quadruple scull, the boat class that narrowly missed selection for Beijing and going to the Olympics in the summer as a spare for both the sculling and rowing teams. He has decided to focus on rowing this season and we formed a pair about 10 days ago.

He’s very strong and has a great feel for the boat and seems to really enjoy training. It’s nice to have a new challenge and we’re having a lot of fun in training at the moment, with our speed and technique progressing every day. It’s early days at the moment, but it’ll be interesting to see just how fast we can go over 5km at the weekend.
