1000 days to 2012, October 2009
The opening ceremony for the London Games (which takes place on my 31st birthday) is now less than 1000 days away . Those days will contain many miles of rowing, weights lifted, food eaten, hours slept and much pain, trial, torment – and elation.

Image 2012 has been headline press this week and I can’t wait; it’s going to be brilliant for the whole country.

I don’t know why anniversaries and milestones like this are so important to us. Perhaps it is just the reminder of what we are training for and why we are doing it. The winter is the hardest time to stay motivated. With racing so far away and the weather beating your spirits it is sometimes tough to remember the reasons why you do it.

I have never had trouble with this but I have seen it in a lot of athletes in the past – this milestone is a reminder that one day in the not too distant future, my crew and I will be sitting at the start ready to enjoy the biggest moment of our lives.

As for now, there are still a lot of things to focus on everyday. We need to get fit, strong, supple and skilled – this takes time. But with the Four’s Head, team sculling trials and the Concept 2 British Indoor Rowing Championships just days away, it’s not hard to stay motivated; even if it has started to rain!
